EVE's incursions go live on Tuesday, Sansha events to follow
The first two stages of EVE Online's new Incursion expansion were released in November and December, bringing us some much-needed UI fixes and removing learning skills from the game. Citing a commitment to polishing the expansion's main features before publishing them, CCP delayed most of the expansion until a third major patch. Scheduled for release on Tuesday, January 18th, the third phase of Incursion will include the extremely impressive new Incarna character builder and periodic Sansha invasions into constellations across EVE.
In a new devblog, CCP has revealed that the Sansha incursions will be starting with some well-deserved build-up events. In previous expansions, new content was simply present as soon as players logged in, with little more than a few lines in the patch notes and a devblog or two to describe the new additions. The fact that the incursions are being heralded in with live events is sure to be popular with players, and it may represent a change in the way CCP delivers new major features. When the final Incursion patch goes live on Tuesday, players may begin to see some odd occurrences that seem very out of place. Events will build up to Sansha's Nation inevitably beginning its crusade against all the systems of New Eden and the incursions going into full swing.
Runes of Magic addresses account hacks
What do you do if a game company's actions get under your skin? If you're a hacker that goes by the name of Cpt.Z3r0, you breach the company's account security and post thousands of user names and passwords to its public forum. Runes of Magic publisher Frogster recently fell victim to said cyber-bullying, and though the offending information was quickly removed from the game's German website, the saga is far from over.
The hacker(s) claim possession of 3.5 million accounts, and in an anonymous video message recently uploaded to YouTube, state that Frogster "better start respecting the people that pay your salary." While specific details of the demands are unclear, the video message hints at Frogster's reputation for censoring critical forum posts. Runes of Magic community manager Mike "Silberfuchs" Kiefer posted an official reply on the game's boards, stating in part that a criminal investigation is underway and that the 2,100 compromised accounts have been blocked from accessing the game, forum, and account management until the dust settles.
The Daily Grind: Which in-game item did you work for the longest?
Most MMORPGs are loot-centric games, and whether the gear is required for basic gameplay or relatively meaningless "flair," often times acquiring certain items takes quite a bit of time and effort. Hi-Rez Studios' 12 Drops of Christmas promotion recently concluded with the gifting of an abominable snowman helmet to the Global Agenda die-hards who managed to make it through the lengthy set of challenges. While most of the tasks were pretty easy to accomplish in-game, coordinating the events with hectic holiday schedules took some doing, and I had a couple of close calls when it came to meeting the objectives and squeaking in under the deadlines.
Today's Daily Grind asks about your prized rare loot items and the hoops you had to jump through to obtain them. Which item took you the longest time to acquire, and how long did you work for it?
